Understanding your workforce and any health issues they may have is critical in maintaining business productivity
What is an Occupational Health Assessment?
An Occupational Health Assessment (or Management Referral) is designed to advise employers on an employee’s health and make recommendations on what adjustments could be considered to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for that employee.
How Occupational Health Assessments can help your business:
- To support an employee to remain in work – if an employee is having health issues that may be affecting their ability to undertake their role, an Occupational Health Assessment will offer expert advice on how you, as their employer, can make reasonable adjustments to help them to stay in work.
- To help an absent employee return to work – if your employee is absent from work, an Occupational Health Assessment will provide you with advice on their fitness for work, an understanding of the issues they are facing, advice on timescales for their return to work, the effects of any medications or treatments, and also prognosis.
- To provide advice on more complex issues – for instance, whether ill health retirement may be a consideration.
Who carries out an Occupational Health Assessment?
Occupational Health Advisors (OHA) – Occupational Health Assessments are usually carried out by an Occupational Health Advisor. OHAs are qualified nurses with additional qualifications and experience in Occupational Health.
Occupational Health Physicians (OHP) – for more complex cases where there are chronic or long term conditions or where the employee may not be able to return to their current role, an assessment with an Occupational Health Physician may be required. An OHP is a doctor who has additional training or experience in Occupational Health.
What happens at an Occupational Health Assessment?
- We triage your request within 1 business day.
- The employee will be offered a remote appointment within 10 business days and will be given access to the referral you have made – this ensures understanding and engagement during the consultation.
- The OH professional will discuss the reason for the referral and undertake a thorough assessment of current and any relevant past health issues. At the end of the assessment the OH professional will openly discuss with your employee the advice to the employer and prepare a comprehensive report.
- If your employee does not wish to exercise their right to view the report prior to release, then the report is made available to you and your employee on our digital portal within 1 business day of the appointment.
